Ribbon Cut on 72 New Affordable Senior Apartments in South Bend

SOUTH BEND, IND. (April 17, 2026) – AHEPA Senior Living commemorated the official opening of AHEPA 100 Phase II Apartments, a 72-unit community of affordable senior housing in South Bend, with a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 17, 2026, announced Chairman of the Board Ike Gulas. Located at 53881 Generations Drive, the three-story, $20.5 million development provides quality, affordable homes for very low-income seniors aged 62 and over through a partnership with HUD’s Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly program. Residents began moving into their new homes in December 2025.

“We’re incredibly proud to open our second community in South Bend and expand our footprint in Michiana,” Gulas said. “This beautiful new community represents our commitment to helping more seniors age with dignity, independence, and support. With growing demand and long waitlists, this opening is timely and vital.”

Community Amenities and Apartment Features

  • 72 one-bedroom/one-bath units, sized between 680 to 703 sq. ft., each designed for accessibility and comfort, with walk-in showers, full-sized kitchen appliances, emergency call systems, strobe light smoke detectors, and energy-efficient features. All apartments are cable and broadband ready and feature task lighting on all counter areas.
  • On-site amenities include a community room with fireplace and TV, fitness and wellness room, multipurpose space, laundry facilities, indoor mailboxes, well-lit landscaped grounds, raised garden beds, gazebo, and ample parking. The community is also pet-friendly.
  • Supportive services coordination to promote independent living and connect residents with essential resources
  • Strategic location proximate to public transportation.

The speaking program featured remarks from AHEPA Senior Living’s executive and local board leadership, federal and state government officials, including LeAnn Angerman, Northwest regional director for U.S. Sen. Jim Banks and Indiana State Senator Linda Rogers; Order of AHEPA Supreme President E. Chris Kaitson, and a blessing by Father John Tsikalas, Saint Andrew Greek Orthodox Church.

As a HUD-assisted and tax credit-supported community, AHEPA 100 Phase II provides rental assistance and service-enriched housing to qualifying very low-income seniors aged 62 and older.

The development builds upon the success of the adjacent 50-unit AHEPA 100 Phase I community and helps meet the growing need for affordable senior housing in South Bend. ASL manages 3 HUD Section 202 communities in Michiana, two in South Bend and one in Mishawaka, now totaling 172 units.

AHEPA 100-II, Inc., a nonprofit organization, is the sponsor and owner of the property.

AHEPA Senior Living broke ground on Phase II on October 10, 2024.
