HUD Secretary Fudge Visits AHEPA Houston Communities

HOUSTON — U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia L. Fudge visited the AHEPA 29 Senior Apartments campus of Houston, March 14, 2022.

Secretary Fudge’s visit was a first by a HUD secretary to an AHEPA Affordable Housing Management (AMC) community. She toured the campus, which is comprised of four phases, and met with residents and AMC personnel. U.S. Rep. Al Green (D-TX), who represents the congressional district where the campus is located, and U.S. Reps. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) and Lizzie Fletcher (D-TX), who represent surrounding congressional districts in Houston, accompanied Secretary Fudge. U.S. Reps. Green is a senior member of the House Committee on Financial Services, which has jurisdiction over public housing.

“We were honored to welcome Secretary Fudge and several members of Congress to our affordable senior living communities in Houston,” AMC President and CEO Steve Beck said. “We applaud their commitment to creating strong and sustainable affordable housing for all, including seniors. We also appreciate the historic level of investment in the HUD Section 202 program provided by Congress and the Administration. Our waitlists in Houston are the largest in our portfolio, so the need and demand is clear.”

We believe Secretary Fudge’s visit speaks volumes to the excellent level of service and commitment we provide to our residents. “I am grateful for her [Secretary Fudge’s] leadership, for a strong partnership between HUD and our local organizations, including AHEPA Senior Housing, to ensure meaningful housing assistance for those in need in our community,” Congresswoman Fletcher said, following the visit.

AMC manages six affordable supportive senior living communities in Houston, totaling 363 units, administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly program.

During the visit with residents, Secretary Fudge and Congressman Green presented AMC Maintenance Supervisor Roberto Selgado with an American Flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol in appreciation for Selgado’s 22 years of service. They also presented President and CEO Beck with an American Flag that will remain at AHEPA 29 Senior Apartments.AHEPA Senior Apartments communities offer very low-income older adults over the age of 62 residential apartment-home living with voluntary supportive services they may need to continue to live independently as they age. The services may include meal services, case management, transportation assistance, public benefits programs enrollment assistance, fitness and wellness programs, housekeeping assistance, and health services.
